  • Cookiebot now offers a compact banner layout alongside the standard formats
  • The Compact layout is built to take up minimal screen space on desktop and mobile
  • Every GDPR opt-in requirement, including granular choice, is preserved at the smaller size
  • Accept, reject, and manage preferences remain immediately visible and tappable
  • The layout meets WCAG accessibility standards for contrast, text size, and screen readers
  • No extra configuration or plan upgrade is required to switch it on

A cookie banner is meant to give visitors a genuine choice, not take over their screen until they make it. We've heard from site owners that the standard banner, while effective, can feel like a lot of real estate for a first-visit decision, particularly on smaller devices. So we've built something smaller.

The new compact banner keeps the same underlying consent engine but reduces the visual footprint substantially, without cutting any of the choices a visitor is entitled to make under the GDPR.

What's Different About the Compact Layout

Rather than a full-width bar or centered dialog, the compact banner sits as a small, discreet element on the visible page. It's designed for site owners and businesses who want the browsing experience to feel uninterrupted while the consent decision still happens up front, before any non-essential cookies load.

The reduced size doesn't mean reduced disclosure. Visitors still see:

A short, clear description of what the site uses cookies for

An option to expand and read full details before deciding

Accept, reject, and manage preferences, all presented with equal visual weight

That last point matters under the GDPR specifically, as consent is only valid if it's as easy to refuse as it is to accept. A compact size makes the banner less intrusive, not less balanced.

Under the GDPR and ePrivacy Directive requirements, most non-essential cookies require freely given, informed, and unambiguous consent before they're placed. That's an opt-in model, where no tracking runs by default, and individuals have to take an affirmative action before it does.

The compact banner doesn't change that logic, it just delivers it in less space. Every layout in Cookiebot™, compact included, blocks non-essential scripts until a visitor makes an active choice, offers granular consent by purpose or vendor rather than a single accept-everything toggle, and gives visitors an accessible way to withdraw or change consent later.

For site owners and businesses weighing layouts, it’s worth remembering that a smaller banner can help create a more pleasant first impression for visitors, and a well-presented, non-intrusive consent request can support healthier opt-in rates.

But the format is a design decision, not a privacy compliance one. Whichever layout you choose, the same disclosure and consent logic applies underneath.

Accessibility at Every Size

Fitting the same information into less space raises an obvious question: does anything get harder to use? The Compact layout was tested against WCAG standards specifically to answer that.

Color contrast meets accessibility thresholds even at the smaller size

Accept, reject, and manage preferences all meet minimum tap target sizes on mobile

Text remains legible without visitors needing to zoom

The banner is fully navigable using a screen reader

How to Turn On the Small Banner

The Compact layout is available now to all Cookiebot customers, at no extra cost and with no plan upgrade required.

Login to your Cookiebot™ Admin Interface.

Go to your domain's banner settings under Configuration.

Select the Compact Banner Layout from the format options.

If you serve both U.S. and EU visitors, each region's rule set, opt-out or opt-in, continues to apply automatically based on visitor location.

Styling, including colors and fonts, carries over automatically if you've already set up your brand appearance.

What's Next

We're working on expanding banner customization options across all Cookiebot layouts, with more styling controls and placement options planned.
